On this day in 1951, J.D. Salinger’s classic novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was published. The novel, centered around troubled 16-year-old Holden Caulfield, expressed common feelings of teenage angst and a resistance to growing up.

The photo below is taken from Fictitious Dishes, a series of meals from novels cooked and photographed by graphic artist Dinah Fried. This particular meal can be found in The Catcher in the Rye. After his disaster date with Sally Hayes, Holden stops at a drug store to eat a Swiss cheese sandwich and a malted.
