[su_dropcap style=”flat” size=”4″]N[/su_dropcap]othing says “I’m a down to earth douchebag” like a charming piece of embroidery. No but really, embroidery is a cool way to give your place a homemade feel. Sam Gibson‘s stitched illustrations are like toasty cups of tea on a Fall afternoon, delightfully cool and soul warming. All of her embroideries are handmade from her own original illustrations. We caught up with Gibson after a case of mistaken gender identity and asked her about her line:

“It is really exciting for me for the embroidery to be seen as straddling both art and craft. I always wanted to create work that paid homage to my home taught sewing skills but allowed me to express myself artistically. I wanted the embroideries to be like quickly drawn illustrations from a sketchbook. Artist’s sketchbooks fascinate me as they document work never seen, never finished or never intended to be public.

I like that the work I do is labour intensive and actually in no way quickly executed. Customers who have bought my work comment on the level of stitched detail but are attracted firstly to the image, be it an illustrated eye or a small minimalist design. At first glance the work is pleasingly simple, random images but up close the sewing puts an unusual spin on it. I would like my work to be received with respect for the sewing but ultimately as pleasing images that people want to have in their homes or workplaces.”
