Musing on the Impossible: The Holographic Worlds of M.C. Escher at Industry City, Brooklyn NY
Yesterday my brain melted. At ESCHER. The Exhibition & Experience, one of New York’s 2018 must-see exhibitions, the Dutch artist’s perspective-mangling worlds sent my mind spinning. Because of my passion for Op and Kinetic art, I was a kid in a candy store. Thanks to the clever, interactive installations that pepper a flawlessly curated selection of Escher’s works, I got …
Andy Mister Ascends With “New Dawn Fades” At TURN GALLERY
There’s nothing overtly didactic about 39-year-old artist Andy Mister’s solo show at TURN Gallery, New Dawn Fades. There are, however, 11 painstaking works on display featuring roughly the same number of representational images, each deftly rendered in incredible detail on monochrome paper using carbon pencil, charcoal and acrylic. The recent passing of Tom Wolfe, an at times controversial literary giant, …

Mr. Miller, who had been approached by then-mayor Mark Epley, suggested showcasing the work of East End artists, borrowed from collectors. As a prelude to reopening the space that …
The Colors of Jen Stark
As one slips slides and careens in and out and down the rabbit-hole of LA artist Jen Stark’s hallucinogenic work, one is reminded of Alice in Wonderland’s fall into that almost never-ending burrow. “Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time to look about.” And like Alice, who grabs onto objects, …

Dan Flavin: in daylight or cool white February 24th – April 14th @ David Zwirner, 537 West 20th Street, New York The brilliance of this work is in Flavin’s permutational use of light itself. His process took a long time to mature over a period of many years before he finally discovered his formal language. In an autobiographical text published …
Brian Eno and the Healing Power of Light Art
Although Brian Eno had already left Roxy Music by the time “Love is the Drug” took most of the planet’s airways by storm, I couldn’t resist the reference in the title. I confess, I worship at the altar of Eno, and I almost fainted when I saw his spellbinding, healing light art in the context of Miami Art Week, contemporary art’s equivalent …

Ron Agam. | An Ode to Black and White.
“Color weakens”, Pablo Picasso. New York’s own Ron Agam strongly agrees. The internationally renowned artist, is widely acclaimed for his “furiously chromatic” geometric artworks. His artistic output successfully attempts to replace sensual pleasure with intellectual design, primarily through mesmerizing black and white acrylics atop low relief wood panels. His optical creations fit perfectly within the resurgence of Op and Kinetic …
Deep Frieze. | Quiet Lunch Guest.
eide Hatry’s stand was slapbang in front of the entrance to the Frieze tent. The German artist had a number of copies of her book, Icons in Ash, on a table, alongside an example of the work, portraiture of the departed, rendered in their ash. A few possible future clients were looking the work over. So into the fair. If Frieze …

God Amongst Gods.
MeLo-X is one of New York City’s most coveted artists. Sure, MeLo’s name rings bells overseas, but the headquarters of his kingdom lies here in Gotham. He takes the city’s sound, processes them, and then coats them in a rich substance that can only be described as “rhythmic freedom.” He is musical liberation in the flesh. A theoretical martyr giving …
Unforgettable.
Sunny & Gabe just dropped another resplendent single titled “Forget Love”. Featuring Odd Future’s Mike G, the song is a jazzy, break heavy serenade that tailspins into a jam session-like frenzy before fading with ghostly allure. Sunny & Gabe’s sound is truly evolving into something wonderful. The Virginia duo is receiving all sorts of approval, including a nod from G.O.O.D. Music …

The Lost Talk: Hayley McCulloch & Paul Brainard at Die Wunderkammer.
Remember our coverage of Die Wunderkammer at The Lodge? Well, there was a brilliant talk between artists Hayley McCulloch and Paul Brainard. Unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to film the talk, but we did get our hands on a transcribed version of the talk via a shady, trench coat wearing stranger who threatened to kill us if we ever …

Piece of Cake.
Rap, and hip-hop in general, has undergone a series of makeovers throughout its young life span. It is an antsy genre, never quite comfortable with being complacent or staying still. It often gets an itch that can only be scratched by reinventing itself or taking on a new meaning–sometimes to the detriment of its audience. For the earlier part of the …

Quiet Lunch Magazine ‡ February 15th, 2013. – February 28th, 2013.

In an effort to stay in step with ideology of those before us, Quiet Lunch gathered …

Counting to 6 Trillion.

The human body is made by cells that also extends to approximately 60 trillion, all of the material that partial atoms and molecules Consists of the elements by building.” – Keita Sakai.

The project is over two years old but even today we can’t help but marvel at Root’s patience.
The Pie Hole: One Day Warranty.
We try to take a healthy approach to food here at Quiet Lunch. The Nyemiah Supremacy.
It’s a cliche but poignant theory that hip-hop is essentially a male dominated field dominated by male ideologies that often come in the form of misogyny and female objectification. In retrospect, it would be safe to say that this is not just a theory but an actual fact. Women’s place in hip-hop has been a volatile one. Although they were right …
Frank.
Normally on Quiet Lunch we feature art that is vivid, slightly misguided, and sometimes riddled with nudity; however, we decided to switch it up a bit by selecting an artist that brings a much needed level of refinement. Frank Caracciolo’s paintings are like stepping into a visual manifestation of your most profound thoughts. His works are everything abstract should be; …
