Oakland painter Michelle Blade has successfully made her work a transcending experience. Her 2009 installation, Painting as Vehicle, transports its audience through a wormhole of vivid patterns and colors.

“By asking people to step on my paintings with their bare feet, lie down on it, carve their name into it, make a wish on it; these works create an opportunity to shift historical roles and function of painting and create a dialog around the ways social interaction can formally complete a work.”
