I recently asked a curator, “why don’t we see penises in art anywhere anymore? I mean if you really think about it, there were legit statues with johnsons on full display everywhere back in the day.” So I was stoked to come across a photo series called Prince on a Black Horse (Anonymous Lover) by Marloes Haarmans. Marloes Haarmans is a London and Amsterdam based conceptual photographer & art-director, who received a BFA at Willem de Kooning Academy in Holland. Marloes hopes for us to accept non-conformity through her photos, to “re-think their own behavior and desires in a humorous, aesthetically and surreal manner by creating her own sculptures.” I think this series is brilliant. I feel deep down we all have something that is “freaky” or “weird” that we like and sometimes we need to express ourselves fully. I didn’t get a satisfactory answer from the curator so I figure I ask, should there be more male nude art? Let me know your thoughts below.
